Superfamily

SuperfamilyPrior to the Eurosonic show in Groningen, Jan Vink asked the Norwegian band SuperFamily some questions.

"You're not really known yet in Holland. What can you tell us about
Superfamily?"

-Superfamily plays a kind of mix between Joy Division and ABBA, and the recipe has made them one of the most popular pop acts in Norway. Superfamily is also considered to be one of Norway’s best live bands, through the use of cheap tricks like male dancers, Socialistic propaganda, French flags and a Las Vegas cheese ball of a vocalist.

"What are you're major influences as a band?"

-I guess, David Bowie, Kim Larsen, The Doors, and a whole bunch of 80's bands it took us 15 years to stop hating.

"What do you expect at Eurosonic?"

-We expect it to be a quality event, we have heard a lot of great things
about it. I also expect to be a little nervous, I get a little jittery playing for brand new crowds...

"And what can we expect from you?"

-The overcoming of my angst for the audience, manifested in a warm
expression of love for them all, with the side effect of me thinking I am
sexually attracted to everybody in the crowd.

"Was it a suprise that "The radio has expressed concerns about what you did
last night"  was the best played song on NRK in 2007, Warsawa the best
album and what did this do to you ?"

-The whole year has been one huge, pleasant surprise!! The success of the
record has allowed us to have great times on stages all over Norway, and
now we get to play in the Netherlands as well.

"Do you read reviews of your own CD's and if so: What do you think about the review on our site?"

-I try to read all the reviews of our records. I take them all very personally; I can become very bitter by a bad review. On the other hand, I find myself admiring the journalists who give us good reviews, as they are divine beings who deserve wonderful lives.

"What are your musical goals for 2008?"

-We have started making songs for a third record, so I hope that they turn
out ok!

"Can we expect you on a real tour in Holland or Europe later this year?"

-Yes, this is very likely; we hope that Eurosonic will be a springboard for gigs in Europe.

"Is there a specific band you'd like to tour with and why so?"

-I would like to tour with The Flaming Lips. Hell, I could even have been
their roadie.  They are so much fun (when they're playing good).

"I saw on your site that you played outside Norway a few times. What is
the major difference between "foreign” public and the typical Norwegian
public?"

-Well, Norwegian crowds can really go bananas for bands they have heard
and liked before, but can be very reserved when experiencing an unknown act. German crowds, for example, seem to be more open and enthusiastic to new acts, but they demand more of the band. For example: they can get a little pissed if you don't play long sets.

"Can we already look forward to a new album and will there be differences
compared to Warsawa?"

-Yes, we plan to record our third album late this year. I think there will be significant differences, regarding lyrical topics and composition style.

"As a last question: What do you want to say to the Dutch readers on this
site ?"

-I am really looking forward to being in the Netherlands again. Please, if you see me and like the band, maybe you can bum me a cigarette? Also, talk a little loud; after this year, my hearing isn't as great as it once was...

Superfamily did a really great show full of energy at the Eurosonic festival.
